Auguste was taken in as a ward to House D'Ambrosie both as a favor to his original mother, and as a last ditch effort to try to keep the house alive. House D'Ambroise was a lower house down on their luck, whom had originally found their success and standing through producing outstanding knights throughout the family. Unfortunately, in recent years the heirs and children started to meet odd, untimely deaths. The more superstitious members of the family believed they were "cursed", and hoped that taking in unrelated children would dissuade their own blood from meeting their demise.While Augustes "parents" did not originally have that same intent, pressure from the family did play part in their decision to take him in.Raised to become a knight, Augustes originally strived to achieve his families ideals. The pressure to live up to his patrons expectations and bring success and glory back to the house pressed down on him throughout his life, and whether he is succeeding or not, he is not aware of.He did his best to study noble life and etiquette as a child, but as most of his life was spent training as soon as he was of age, he is found lacking in certain upper circles. He has long since given up trying to be taken seriously.
As the Gates of Judgement have been opened and the Dragonsong war has ended, Augustes has returned to Ishgard from a decade of patrolling outside the city and protecting what is inside. Years of fighting and surviving with only brief check ins with other Dragoons and commanding soldiers has left him rusty in social matters, but he is more than ready to put his mask back in place.Upon meeting him, he will show you an easygoing, laid back soldier enjoying the slower peace times. However, if you approach the matter of his family and their expectations of him with the lack of war, you may find him more reticent and cold.
House D'Ambroise founded their history on knighthood. They took pride in training up their children to be the best of the best, to achieve glory by any means. These expectations were carried over onto the children they took in, regardless of blood relations, and Augustes was no exception. His patrons, and thus his new parents, took him in when he was a young, barely walking child. As such, Augustes was surrounded by peers of various ages as he grew up in the House alongside them, with little memory of where he originally came from.Unfortunately, as the Dragonsong war came to a head, many of those children - now adults, lost their lives in the war. Augustes was one of the lucky ones to survive. He is trying to find out if he appreciates this luck or not.Due to the House falling on grim circumstances, there are few blood heirs still alive. The first in line to House D'Ambroise, Augustes had no ties to, but a few years after he was taken in, his new parents found themselves bearing a son. Augustes is well aware of his status as a ward, and not a blood related child to his patrons.
You can find Augustes roaming the streets of the Brume, or at the Forgotten Knight having a pint. It is rare that he is actually at his family's (slightly crumbling) manor.While he does enjoy imbibing and finding solace in drink, he's more likely to be found chatting up the next person to catch his eye at the tavern. If you ask him why he'd say "I can't help it, I fall in love with someone new everyday," with a roguish smirk, but the truth underneath is more to do with wanting to lose himself in someone else for the night.
